The Grok app voices you can hear here (pre-recorded, uses no previews)

  • Ara
  • Eve
  • Leo
  • Rex
  • Sal

Gork, the sixth app voice, is not one of xAI’s API voices, so it plays only inside the Grok app, not here.

Short answer: to change the voice on Grok, start voice mode, tap the settings icon in the corner of the voice screen, pick a voice and close the panel. The Grok app offers six voices: Ara, Eve, Leo, Rex, Sal and Gork. All but Gork are also xAI API voices, so you can hear each of the five read your own text in the box above before you switch, free and without opening the app.

How to change the voice on Grok

These steps follow Fello AI's Grok voice mode guide (updated 16 October 2026). xAI publishes no help page for the app's voice settings, and we could not check the app ourselves, so an icon may look slightly different in your version.

  1. Start voice mode. Open a chat and tap the voice icon in the message bar.
  2. Open the voice settings. Tap the settings icon in the corner of the voice screen.
  3. Pick a voice: Ara, Eve, Leo, Rex, Sal or Gork.
  4. Adjust the speed if you like. The same panel has a speed slider.
  5. Close the panel and keep talking. Grok answers in the new voice.

The same guide says switching voices needs no paid plan and that your choice syncs across your devices. Elon Musk put it on X as "Easy to change voice style & speed with Grok".

On iPhone, Android and the web

The steps are the same everywhere voice mode runs:

  • iPhone and iPad: start voice mode in the Grok app, then use the settings icon on the voice screen.
  • Android: the Grok Android app has the same voice screen and settings.
  • Web: on grok.com, voice mode works in Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers, with the voice picker in the same place.

This changes Grok's voice only. The voice your iPhone itself uses to read text aloud is set in iOS Settings under Accessibility, then Spoken Content.

The descriptions come from Fello AI and TechDevNotes, not from xAI; how a voice sounds is a matter of taste, so play the samples above and judge for yourself.

To switch Grok to a male voice, pick Leo, Rex, Sal or Gork; those guides describe Ara and Eve as female. Ara, Eve, Leo, Rex and Sal are the five original Grok voices, and they are also built-in voices of xAI's text to speech API, which is why this page can play them. Gork is not in the API, so it is the one voice you can only hear in the app.

Voice vs. personality

The app also has personalities, such as Storyteller or Meditation. A personality changes how Grok talks: its tone, style and what it says. The voice changes how it sounds. They are separate settings, so switching one leaves the other alone.

Can you add your own voice to Grok?

Not in the app. xAI's custom voices live in the xAI API and console: you record or upload about two minutes of your own speech there, pass a verification step that proves the voice is yours, and get a voice id for text to speech and voice agents. The app's picker keeps its built-in voices. The Grok voice clone guide explains how it works and what it costs.

Why the app doesn't have all 28 voices

xAI's text to speech docs list 28 built-in voices. Only the 5 originals are in both places. xAI's announcement of 6 July 2026 released 21 flagship voices for the API, text to speech and the Voice Agent Builder, not for the app's voice mode, and the guides above list only the six app voices. So Luna, Orion, Altair and the other 23 API voices will not show up in the app's picker. The voices page plays all 28 side by side, and each one can read your own text there.

Use a Grok voice outside the app

To have a Grok voice read a script of your own, for a video, a podcast intro or a message, use the box at the top of this page: type your text, pick a voice, press Generate and Download MP3. Speech tags such as [pause], [laugh] and <whisper> work in the text; the speech tags guide lists them all.

Signed out, you get 3 previews a day of up to 200 characters, downloadable with a short spoken credit at the end; a free account removes the credit, and a Google account raises the limit to 1,000 characters per clip. Your text goes to xAI's model through our Cloudflare function to make the audio and is not stored. If you build your own app, the same voices cost $15 per million characters through the Grok Voice API.

App details checked 3 Nov 2026. This site is independent and not affiliated with xAI; the Grok app may change its voice settings at any time.
